I keep seeing people mention “soul ties” but I’m confused about what they actually are. I watched a few videos, but it was three different people saying three entirely different things. Is this something totally different from the twin flame connection? Or is it just another spiritual bond we can have?
Does anyone know if soul ties are their own thing? And how would you even know if you have them at the same time as your twin flame connection?

Like any of the terminology here, people are going to use it in different ways.
For me, it’s important to understand things like twin flame vs soulmate if you really want to understand the connection and the energy at the higher levels, as they’re both examples of two different types of soul ties.
But with spirituality, especially on social media, you could ask 10 different people what that means and get 10 different answers.
I wouldn’t worry too much about the labels if I were you.
It’s probably good that you’re confused… the alternative would be that you’re apathetic and not really paying attention to what you’re reading. People are literally using/misusing these terms to mean different things.
Soul ties can form with anyone through intense experiences. Sexual connections, trauma bonds, deep friendships, even family relationships. Most spiritual communities recognize that you can have multiple soul ties throughout your life, and they can be either healthy (supportive friendships, loving partnerships, like a soulmate) or unhealthy (draining, codependent, manipulative, like a karmic).
Twin flames are understood differently. You have only one twin flame. Your literal mirror soul. The connection is permanent and unbreakable, designed to trigger deep shadow work and spiritual evolution. Some teachers say twin flames have their own unique “soul tie” or energy cord that’s fundamentally different from regular soul ties because it’s an organic part of both souls rather than something that forms through experience.
Personally, I do think this is probably terminology that doesn’t really add anything of value. Some will consider twin flames a soul tie, others won’t because they’re somehow different. It doesn’t really matter.
The three different definitions you encountered probably came from three different spiritual frameworks, and that’s before social media creators start taking creative liberties. Christian deliverance ministries talk about “godly” versus “ungodly” soul ties, with the ungodly ones formed through sexual sin or trauma requiring spiritual breaking ceremonies. New Age communities describe energetic cords connecting chakras and auras, often involving past life connections. Then you have psychology people who use the term soul-tie just as a new age term for attachment theory.
Twin flames and soul ties can definitely coexist. During separation, which sometimes lasts years, you’re going to form connections with other people. Some call these “catalyst relationships” or even “false twin flames”. Soul ties that teach you what you need to learn before reunion happens. The twin flame bond itself remains underneath everything else.
It has become an umbrella term that different communities use completely differently to the point where it really is almost worthless.
Twin flames fit somewhere in that mess depending on who you ask. I would think of soul ties as a spectrum. On one end, you have beautiful connections like the friend who feels like home, the mentor who changes your life, a healthy romantic bond. On the other end, trauma bonds, obsessive attachments to exes, codependent relationships that drain you. @Kaplan already linked soulmates and karmics, which is a good place to start reading.
Sexual connections create strong 3D soul ties because of the energy exchange involved, which is why so many traditions warn about casual encounters. You’re literally sharing energy at the chakra level, and that doesn’t just evaporate when the relationship ends. This is separate from but can overlap with twin flame connections. I think a lot of people experience stuff like this, hear the term “twin flame” and connect the two together.
