I’m sure people have all sorts of different opinions about why this all happens and what it looks like on the 5D, but I think these are the main differences.
On the left, you have soulmates. Main differences are that you can have multiple and they’re not always romantic. I think most people have at least one out there.

Sure, they can be intense when compared with a “normal” relationship with someone who has no spiritual attachment to you other than you’re attracted to each other’s physical bodies, but it will never compare. When you meet your twin, all seven chakras activate at once. Your electromagnetic fields constantly interact - you’re essentially one organism operating across two bodies. People will have different beliefs and that’s a good thing because this journey is unique to us all.
Whichever is better, more important or intense (whatever you are looking for) comes from whatever your soul recognizes as that ultimate connection. Whether that’s about sharing the same soul energy vs compatible energies… that’s something you kinda have to feel into for yourself. 
The spiritual purpose thing. A personal purpose thing. For me, TFs are about that union/ascension process, while soulmates are more about specific lessons. But again, that’s just what resonates with my experience.
With a soulmate, you can have a functional relationship. You can have a happy life. I think people compete because the idea of a twin flame is “better” but this is a case of pick the struggle you want. TFs might be a better life in the end, but do you really want to struggle through what it takes to get it?
I don’t think most people even know what they’re getting themselves in to. Twin flames literally force you to face every unhealed part of yourself whether you’re ready or not, so there’s that.
