Could someone explain the Kundalini awakening process? Descriptions seem a little… mixed and some make it sound the same as the dark night of the soul. Is it the same thing? Does one lead to another? Does it always happen with twin flames and is it good or bad?

Oh, good question!
This is something I know my twin worked with before we met. She’s spoken about Kundalini meditations, but I don’t fully know the details. She’s a big fan though.
From what I understand, it’s not the same as the DNOTS and more about the energy flow through chakras… but I’ll leave it for someone who understands better to get into the details. I’ll be following!
These are three distinct experiences that can overlap but aren’t the same thing at all.
Kundalini is primarily an energetic phenomenon from yogic traditions. The dormant Shakti energy at your root chakra rises through the sushumna nadi along your spine, activating and clearing each of the seven chakras. The physical symptoms are intense and unmistakable - heat at the base of the spine, electrical currents running through your body, involuntary movements called kriyas, tingling, vibrations.
People also see auras, geometric patterns, hearing frequencies, digestive issues, heart palpitations. The emotional side includes rapid mood swings, feeling raw and vulnerable like a child again, buried trauma surfacing for healing.
Dark night of the soul comes from Christian mysticism - St. John of the Cross wrote about it in the 16th century. It’s a passive purification where you feel completely abandoned by the Divine, lose all spiritual consolations, can’t pray or meditate in familiar ways. Everything feels meaningless and empty.
The dark night CAN occur as a stage within kundalini awakening, particularly during purification phases. But dark night is psychological and spiritual with no physical phenomena, while kundalini is intensely physical AND spiritual.
Some people experience both at once, some experience them separately, and some only experience one.
Kundalini awakening is the experience of the primal life force energy, coiled at the base of the spine, becoming active and rising through the body.
Twin flames can activate kundalini through transmission of Shakti energy - through physical proximity, touch, eye contact, sexual union, sometimes even online or energetic contact. Complementary polarities release pulsating kundalini energy. The separation phases often intensify awakening as ego healing occurs.
This is NOT universal or inevitable. Not all twin flame encounters involve kundalini, and most kundalini awakenings have nothing to do with twin flames.
Whether it’s “good or bad” depends entirely on preparation, guidance, and support systems.
The benefits are… profound. Noticeable. There’s an expansion of consciousness, direct experience of oneness, deep emotional healing, release of long-held traumas, increased energy and creativity, and reduction of fear of death. Enhanced empathy, psychic abilities emerging and usually an internal peace with all of that. For twin flames, it also means a spike in telepathy.
The dangers are equally real.
Kundalini Syndrome happens when energy awakens suddenly in someone unprepared. It should not be done in unsupervised practice. This is very, very far from the easy progressive healing work we always talk about. There is a real risk of harm to anyone trying to do this without knowing what they’re working with. A full psychotic break is a very real risk.
It needs a gradual awakening under careful supervision and a strong understanding of the whole process.
The timeline for integration varies from weeks to decades. Definitely not the same as a DNOTS.
They can overlap but they’re not the same thing.
I had intense energy shifts and got way more sensitive to everything about 3 months in. My twin hadn’t experienced theirs yet at that point. The physical stuff was weird - heat sensations, really strong emotional and energetic reactions I’d never felt before. I’d had some smaller spiritual experiences before meeting them, but nothing like this.
The whole twin flame thing getting mixed up with kundalini is a modern Western invention.
Traditional yogic texts don’t mention twin flames at all (or anything that seems related, even). Kundalini has been documented for centuries in Kashmir Shaivism and Hindu Tantra. They’re completely separate frameworks that some people are trying to merge.
There might be some overlap but unless you’re very actively trying to work with it I probably wouldn’t worry about it.
From what I’ve experienced, the Kundalini awakening can happen at unexpected moments. Mine seemed to trigger right when we finally opened up about our connection, even though we were still physically apart at the time. It was this intense energetic shift that happened the moment vulnerability entered the picture.
I’m not entirely certain it was a full Kundalini awakening versus just a massive energy surge, but the timing was meaningful. The emotional honesty seemed to reach something on an energetic level, even across the distance.
As for whether it’s the same as the dark night of the soul, in my case, they felt like different experiences. The energy activation was more physical and electric, while the dark night was more of an emotional/spiritual dismantling. Though I could see how they might overlap for some people.
I can share what happened to me during separation. It’s different from the dark night of the soul, though both can be very intense.
For me, kundalini was this incredibly physical experience. My whole body felt alive in a way I’d never experienced before, with these waves of energy that started at the base of my spine and just rose. It was overwhelming at first, but also strangely beautiful. The best way I can describe it is that something dormant inside me finally woke up.
It opened my heart center. Before this, I’d been so closed off emotionally, especially during the pain of separation. But this energy cleared blockages I didn’t even know I had. It forced me to feel everything-not just the pain, but also love, compassion, and connection to something bigger than myself.
The dark night of the soul feels more psychological and emotional, that crushing despair and ego death. Kundalini is more energetic and physical, though it messes with your emotions too. In my experience, the dark night happened first. I had to break down before I could rebuild with this new energy flowing through me.
My twin was the catalyst for all of it. Something about that connection just unlocked everything. Not everyone experiences it, but when it happens, you’ll know.
Yeah, kundalini awakening and ascension are connected, though people describe these experiences differently.
The awakening can get triggered by specific events. For me, it happened around a powerful astrological event - the timing felt important. Sometimes reaching out to your twin flame for the first time can set things off energetically. Kundalini awakening isn’t always smooth, though. Some of us have energetic blocks that make the process more intense. The energy wants to rise and clear everything in its path, but when there are deep blocks from trauma or fear, it can feel pretty rough. That’s probably why it gets confused with the dark night of the soul… they can overlap.
Is it good or bad? Honestly, it’s major but uncomfortable.
Anyone dealing with serious blocks will tell you it can be brutal at times. If you want to understand the mechanics better, The Kundalini Guide. It breaks down what’s happening in your body and energy system. It helped me make sense of things.
The Kundalini awakening is more of an energetic thing - it’s often described as this energy that rises up through your body, starting from the base of your spine and moving to the crown of your head. When it happens, people get this powerful sensation of light or energy moving upward through their energy centers. It can bring waves of bliss, euphoria, and this sense of connection to everything.
The dark night of the soul is more about the emotional and spiritual purging - the painful letting go, the feelings of isolation, the questioning of everything you thought you knew.
Sometimes one can trigger the other, though. The TF energy can be so intense that it activates both experiences at different points. Not everyone goes through a full Kundalini awakening, but many twins do have some form of energetic activation at least.
If you’re experiencing either, take care of yourself and stay grounded. Seek support if you need it.
When I read The Serpent Power, kundalini awakening seemed to follow its own timeline based on spiritual readiness and practices. The twin flame encounter might coincide with it or trigger some emotional clearing, but treating your twin as the source of your awakening can create unhealthy energetic dependency.
I think that the most important kundalini work happens when we’re not focused on the twin flame connection at all. It could help but it shouldn’t be a focus or a required step or anything.
From what I’ve experienced, kundalini awakening doesn’t always happen to both twins at the same time, or even in the same way.
In my situation, I went through something incredibly intense and sudden that I’m pretty sure was a kundalini awakening. It was impossible to miss, like every cell in my body was vibrating at a different frequency. But my TF is not spiritual at all. Like, zero interest in any of this stuff. They have a strong sense of purpose and direction in life, but they’d probably laugh if I tried explaining energy work or spiritual awakening. They’re very focused on success in the physical world and I think that distracts them.
I think they might have gone through their own version without recognizing it for what it was. Some people aren’t wired to interpret experiences through a spiritual lens, so maybe their awakening manifested differently, like intense emotional swings or physical symptoms they just chalked up to stress or something else. Probably just think they’re tired from working too hard.
So I don’t think kundalini awakening is guaranteed for both twins. When it does happen, the experience can be really different depending on where each person is on their spiritual path. Mine felt like getting hit by lightning, but theirs (if it happened) might have been so subtle they didn’t even notice it consciously.
