I’ve seen so many different descriptions (and attempted descriptions) of what twin flames are or are not. Cassady wrote the absolute best thread on the twin flame journey here but if you had to explain it to someone in a nutshell what would you say? Do you just say like “soulmates on steroids” or do you get into the details?

But I’ll start with the truth. Nobody knows for sure. Not the specifics anyway, and you should be very wary of anyone who claims they have all the answers.
But here’s what I DO know after years in this community and going through my own journey to union.
We see the same patterns in multiple cultures throughout history.
We see the same patterns happening in people around the world who have never heard the term before. Many of whom were never spiritually awakened before this journey began.
The patterns are undeniable.
A woman in Brazil describes the exact same chest pressure as a man in Norway. Neither has ever spoken. They’re not in the same groups. They’ve never read the same books.
Yet their experiences match almost word for word.
A guy in Texas wakes up at 2:22am for weeks straight. Mentions it in passing to someone from Japan. She goes pale. Same time. Same weeks. Neither can explain it.
A teacher in London starts seeing 1111 everywhere. License plates. Glances at their phone at exactly 11:11. Random timestamps. She joins our forum for the first time and finds dozens of people describing the exact same thing. Down to the feeling that washes over them when it happens.
The sudden knowing before you even speak to them.
The dreams that feel more like memories.
The feeling of them speaking in your head or even touching you without being there.
A love that most “normal” people think only exists in movies.
A horrible separation that makes a “normal” breakup feel like nothing.
The connection that cracks you wide open… only to rebuild you into someone you barely recognize.
Different people. Different countries. Different lives. Same patterns. Every single time.
And none of this is new.
Ancient Greek philosophers wrote about souls split in two, searching for their other half.
Hindu scriptures describe divine partnerships that transcend lifetimes.
Egyptian mythology speaks of twin souls created together at the dawn of existence.
Indigenous cultures across the Americas have passed down stories of mirror spirits destined to reunite.
We have newspapers using the term “twin soul” as early as the 1800s.
Different civilizations. Different centuries. No internet. No way to compare notes.
Yet they all arrived at the same truth.
That doesn’t happen by coincidence. It isn’t explained by limerance or wishful thinking. It’s hard to explain even when you’ve gone through it all yourself.
Some believe that the true purpose of twin flames is to push all of humanity forward. Others just focus on the incredible romance and connection.
The one thing I do know for sure is that something real is happening here. Something that’s been happening since the beginning of recorded history… and probably long before.
And that’s exactly why your twin flame journey feels so confusing sometimes.
You’re walking a path that doesn’t fit into normal relationship boxes. The rules are different. The timeline is different. The purpose is different.
Twin flames are about more than “just” finding love. You go through a journey to become the version of yourself who’s ready for the greatest love story you’ll ever live.
/edit: But, yes, if asked in passing, I’ll normally just shrug and say “Kind of like soulmates” and leave it at that.
@Cassady (of course) covered a lot of ground really well. I’ll add some historical context that might help when explaining this to people.
The philosophical roots go back further than most realize. Plato’s Symposium (around 385 BCE) has Aristophanes describing humans as originally having four arms, four legs, two faces - and Zeus splitting them in half because they threatened the gods. That’s where the whole “searching for your other half” concept in Western romance actually comes from.
Although at this point, most people have probably heard it from TikTok. Or pop culture references like this or this. Not good.
Hindu traditions have Ardhanarishvara. Shiva and Parvati as a composite form split down the middle, representing masculine and feminine energies as inseparable. The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad describes the cosmic man splitting into male and female to create all life.
Jewish mysticism gets even closer to what we talk about here. Nachmanides wrote in the 13th century that God takes a soul and separates it into two halves, placing one in a male body and one in a female. The Talmud says 40 days before birth, a heavenly voice proclaims who your destined partner is.
You can find references in every religion, even in the Bible.
I think if anyone is here learning about this for the first time, they should read this thread before anything else:
Soulmates are separate souls with deep compatibility. Those relationships feel harmonious, peaceful, stable. You can have multiple soulmates throughout your life - friends, family members, romantic partners. They help you grow through support and happiness. They are not what the movies would have you think.
Twin flames are supposedly one soul in two bodies. Only one exists for you. The relationship isn’t easy or peaceful - it triggers everything unhealed inside you. Your twin mirrors your wounds, your fears, your shadow. That’s the whole point. Growth through confrontation rather than comfort.
Then there’s karmic partners - souls from past lives with unresolved business. These relationships teach specific lessons, often painfully, then end once the karma clears.
The “false twin” or catalyst twin concept explains connections that feel like twin flames but aren’t - they trigger similar intensity and awakening but serve as preparation rather than the actual thing.
So when explaining to someone new, I’d probably say something like: soulmates make you feel at home, twin flames burn your house down so you can build something real from the ashes. Dramatic but… accurate?
The stages framework helps people understand where they are, even though everyone’s experience varies.
In general you have 6-8 stages or phases.
-
Pre-meeting awakening (dark night of the soul, feeling something’s missing)
-
Recognition (that overwhelming first encounter)
-
Honeymoon period, then crisis where core wounds surface.
-
The runner/chaser separation can last years - sometimes lifetimes, according to some beliefs.
-
Surrender happens when the chaser stops pursuing and focuses on self-healing.
-
Then illumination, where both do their individual work
-
Finally, union.
The runner/chaser dynamic specifically - one twin (usually carrying more masculine energy regardless of gender) withdraws from the intensity. The other (carrying feminine energy) pursues obsessively seeking answers. Community wisdom says that when the chaser stops chasing, the runner returns. Both are actually running from themselves, not each other.
People should know these stages aren’t linear. You cycle through them. And physical union isn’t guaranteed or even the point - internal union matters more. The 5D connection exists regardless of 3D circumstances.
That’s a lot to dump on someone asking casually though. So yeah, “like soulmates but more intense” works for casual conversations.
For me it was an intense experience of true love as we discovered we were inseparable parts of a greater whole. It felt like we were instantly married, or like we already were and we were just discovering it. That feeling of finding each other while also feeling like you’ve always known them.
I asked her, what is love? She said, only the eyes and heart can say it, words cannot. Two hearts beat as one. That’s twin flame.
The divine masculine/feminine thing also confuses people. It has nothing to do with biological gender or who’s the man/woman in the relationship. Everyone carries both energies. The Divine feminine is intuition, creativity, and receptivity. Divine masculine is groundedness, action, protection. The work involves balancing both within yourself before union can happen externally.
“Spiritual PB&J”
That’s been my description twice and they seemed satisfied with the answer ![]()
We all come from soul families with similar soul frequencies, but twins share the exact same frequency - they’re mostly us, just in a completely different outer form. They’ll turn your life upside down to places you couldn’t even conceive of, though most of us don’t have the easiest of relationships sometimes.
I tend to take a more scientific look towards TF’s. Being an Aphant, someone that suffers from Aphantasia (or the inability to mentally visualize), I find myself having to create a logical sense of everything. In essence, imagine a particle, in essence like a Quantum Particle. In 3D, the particle is your consciousness or soul. What would happen upon it’s transcendence to 5D, or even 6D? It would have too much data to be properly held into a single 3D being. So, it becomes split between two beings to continue it’s growth. Due to Entanglement laws, both halves’ cores would have a constant pull towards each other. The core is the unchangeable ideals, values, beliefs, etc.. that make us who we are. A visualization could be two half orbs with a bolt of lightning between them as the entanglement connection. Initially its a little chaotic until their first meeting, just like a bolt of lightning sparking out branches here and there.
Once the two form their initial union, everything seems calmer as their gap sprouting the entangled chaos is no longer there. But, once separated from each other again, depending on the separation type, the chaos of the two becomes stronger. If the separation is non-consented by them, imagine an initial burst of chaos, like an explosive chaos of splitting an atomic particle in fission. At least that’s what it became for me and my own.
During this separation, they can, and often do, become more polarized into the opposites. As if one held a positive charge, the other a negative. The ensuing chaos of their lives, influences of social 3D, defensive walls, political beliefs, religious beliefs, etc.. alter their outer shells. Much like a social weathering. The longer and more distant the two separate, the more pronounce the changes. Sometimes, to the extent of incompatibility within the 3D, until the 3D shell is shed and the 5D cores reform to continue their growth again.
Is this 100% accurate, most likely not, but its a scientific means that I can look at to describe it, having to means to conceive it otherwise, due to being an Aphant and unable to think without rationality.
That must be… interesting on the twin flame journey.
I look at it as Guide 3D, Guard 3D, Grow 3D. Eventually each should transcend, so we are here to assist in making sure they can and do. As to the romance and connection, that would be one of our greatest tools in doing so.
Let’s just say it has been an experience, one that bordered many mental breakdowns. Thing with my Aphantasia, it isn’t the genetic type. It was a result of an auto-accident that I had to be resuscitated from and had damage done to the Pineal gland, or Third Eye, via a closed head injury and also loss and fragmentation of memories. So to add to the interesting factor, I have little recollection of our initial union. So add that to the mix. We found each other again over 3 decades later, discussed our lives, noticed many parallels, the chaos each had, polarizations that each obtained, and I noticed the irrational emotions that could never make sense to me upon reconnect.
A twin is you in another body - they come in like magic, shake up your world, illuminate the parts of yourself connected to source while drawing stark comparison on things you have to work on.
You’ll go through a dark night of the soul that feels like painful agony from separation. You’ll scream at God (or who/whatever), feel like crying on the floor for days - and without this dark night, it’s not a twin. That’s the true test in my experience, especially when your signs have that intense karmic connection as mine did.
The runner feels things are too intense and may seek that connection elsewhere, but eventually learns it can’t be replicated anywhere but with twin. Meanwhile, the chaser has to reach that point of surrender, saying, ‘If it happens great, if not I’m okay.’ The hardest part is being able to honestly do that - because most of the time we say this and then we try to ignore the fact we’re just hoping that tomorrow the separation ends because we said it.
When you finally come together, usually when both decide they can’t live without the other, that’s union - and then you get working on mission.
That metaphor is honestly perfect and I’m probably going to steal it next time someone asks me to explain this.
The karmic connections often feel like twin flames to people going through them. The intensity is similar, the obsession can be similar. The difference I’ve noticed (and seen discussed here a lot) is the direction of growth. Karmic relationships keep you spinning in the same patterns, same lessons on repeat. Twin flame connections force you forward even when you’re kicking and screaming about it.
This is such a good way to put it.
I think that’s why people get so hung up on the physical separation being the ‘problem’ when really the 5D connection never breaks. You’re always linked at that core frequency level even when the 3D stuff is a complete mess. My TF and I went through almost two years of no contact and I could still feel her energetically, especially during big emotional moments for either of us
I really like this framework. The alliteration makes it memorable but it also captures something real about the journey that gets lost when people focus purely on the romantic aspect.
The way I see it, the intense connection isn’t the destination - it’s the fuel. You can’t do the guiding, guarding, and growing work if you’re running on empty. The love charges you up for something bigger than just the two of you.
Yep, Separation, Chaos to learn through, Divine love, its all the tools we have to complete the journey.
People make up their own definitions sometimes to suit their own situation or sometimes to get views on social media but it’s basically the theory of meeting your other self. One soul incarnated into two bodies.
Some call it divine feminine (DF or positive polarity) and divine masculine (DM or negative polarity.) So a man can be a DF and a woman the DM, or both could be the same gender. You’re always connected at the 5th dimension level, but not necessarily at the 3rd dimension level. I read that it’s rare for both polarities to incarnate at the same time and normally one stays in the 5th dimension as a spirit guide.
A lot of people think the purpose is romance or a mission. But supposedly, a true twin flame’s purpose is to spiritually wake you up? You don’t need anyone to start doing mission work and a soul mate is better for romantic relationships (IMO.) The energy in the connection apparently moves differently than a normal relationship. You can be platonic TFs for a while, but it won’t last like that.
For many (not my experience) they start dating briefly and then one ends it and the other goes into ego death. Ego death isn’t for the faint of heart and as hard as it sounds you only wish it was that easy. The obsessive thinking on the person is horrible and just keeping busy with hobbies isn’t enough. All your mental energy pours out to them which makes them run more. This is when many go looking for help to stop the intrusive thoughts. The best way is to block them physically and on social media, not out of spite, but to pull the energy back to you.
Some experience a Kundalini Awakening with it. The law of attraction can kick into overdrive. Many start seeing signs and numbers. Some flames actually look alike, especially around the eyes. But here’s what confuses me, how do you know if someone’s your twin flame vs just a catalyst?
Such a great topic! How have we not had this already by now?? For me the simplest way is to explain twin flames as mirror souls, two halves of the same original energy source that came from the same ‘flame’ so to speak. The intensity people feel comes from basically meeting yourself in another body.
But if people just use the term soulmate interchangeably, I won’t correct them… unless I think they are actually on the twin flame journey and I think knowing that might serve them. Otherwise, just let them use whatever label they want to use.
Soulmates bring harmony and peace, you can have multiple throughout life and they complement your character. Twin flames? One person, intense interactions, and honestly kind of exhausting sometimes. The purpose isn’t romantic love, but more about pushing each other to deal with your stuff. The connection acts as a mirror reflecting both your light and your shadows, which is why it can be so confronting. Meeting your twin flame often triggers a spiritual awakening because you sense something unusual about it. It brings up fears and patterns you’ve been avoiding.
Your connection exists and it’s real. The work you’re doing on yourself matters.
